Everyone has a network …
Networking can be daunting, but did you know that everyone already has a network? Reconnecting with former colleagues or expanding your network to include 'friends of friends' can be magical. Research shows that connecting with 'friends of friends' is more effective than your immediate contacts when you're in a career transition because they have new insights to share with you.
Networking is all about sharing mutually beneficial insights, and the more you do it, the easier it gets. I think of it as having a chat and showing interest in learning about the other person. Before meeting someone new, I check out their LinkedIn profile and try to identify shared interests. I have a few open questions ready, such as what led them to their current role or what they enjoy most about what they do.
I also go prepared to help and share, and ask the question, "how can I help you?"
There are very few things in life that we can accomplish alone. That's why the I’m always keen to add to my network, so I arrange a coffee chat with a ‘new friend’ each week.
What do you do?
